The Bergen Chapter of SEAS Basic Sailing Courses are taught by Red Cross certified instructors, following US Sailing textbook and class materials, are intended to teach the basics of sailing to those who have never been on a sailboat as well as those with some experience.

The basic sailing course consists of 12 hours of classroom instruction in which you will learn

  • Sailing terms
  • Points of sail
  • Sail trim
  • Launching
  • Mooring
  • Rules of the road
  • Boating safety.

16 hours of actual sailing experience on the Monksville Reservoir in Ringwood, N.J. is also included.

All graduates receive the American Red Cross Basic Sailing Certificate, and will have gained the confidence, experience and knowledge to sail a boat.

You must be in good physical condition and able to swim to take the course.
